Developing the Five Big Ideas in the Teaching for Mastery

This ‘hands-on’ workshop will provide ideas that Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers can use when implementing practice linked with The Five Big Ideas in the Teaching for Mastery:

  1. Representation and structure

  2. Mathematical thinking

  3. Fluency

  4. Variation

  5. Coherence – using small steps

The aims of the session will be:

  • To elicit how aspects of a Teaching for Mastery (TfM) approach can be used to enhance children’s mathematics learning within Primary teaching, so that they are all able to access provision whilst being provided with appropriate challenge.

  • To determine how children can be supported with developing fluency alongside flexibility with links to reasoning and problem solving.

This session is suitable for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Teachers, plus Maths Subject Leaders.
